Gotch explained it as the child "standing alone and unafraid in the innermost, horridest home of the Dragon, called the World, who is powerless against her innocence". The model for the child was his daughter Phyllis.

Sandys's subject, Morgan le Fay . . . was the queen of Avalon, who in Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur was so jealous of the esteem of which her half-brother King Arthur was held that she attempted to use her powers of witchcraft and sorcery to murder him. In Sandys's painting . . . she is seen weaving a magic lamp and chanting spells over a garment that she has woven for Arthur which, when he puts it on, she intends to burn him to death.

Thérèse of Lisieux (2 January 1873 – 30 September 1897), or Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, born Marie-Françoise-Thérèse Martin, was a French Carmelite nun. She is also known as "The Little Flower of Jesus".

The Legend of Briar Rose is the title of a series of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones which were completed between 1885 and 1890. The four original paintings–The Briar Wood, The Council Chamber, The Garden Court and The Rose Bower–and an additional ten adjoining panels, are located at Buscot Park in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
