The Legend of Briar Rose is the title of a series of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones which were completed between 1885 and 1890. The four original paintings–The Briar Wood, The Council Chamber, The Garden Court and The Rose Bower–and an additional ten adjoining panels, are located at Buscot Park in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
from the wikipedia article on the Briar Rose series. You can see the rest of the paintings in the series there, and read the inscriptions. Burne-Jone's daughter (Margaret) was the model for Briar Rose.

A Fairy Tale

Arthur Wardle

A Fairy Tale, 1895
Oil on canvas

This rather odd painting depicts a scene from The Bridal of Triermain by Sir Walter Scott:
All seem'd to sleep – the timid hare
On form, the stag upon his lair,
The eagle in her eyrie fair
               Between the earth and sky.
But what of pictured rich and rare
Could win De Vaux's eye-glance, where,
Deep slumbering in the fatal chair,
               He saw King Arthur's child!
Doubt, and anger, and dismay,
From her brow had pass'd away,
Forgot was that fell tourney-day,
For, as she slept, she smiled:
It seem'd, that the repentant Seer
Her sleep of many a hundred year
               With gentle dreams beguiled.

This painting is so different! I wish I could find a higher quality photo . . . Anyway, notice the knight on horseback in the background. And how the fairies hover above the ground!

I love the colors and the girl looks so pretty and graceful. She rather reminds me of a princess or worthy peasant maid in a fairy tale. Snow White perhaps?
You probably noticed that the style is a lot like William Adolphe Bouguereau's and they have the same last name. Elizabeth Jane Gardner Bouguereau was William Adolphe Bouguereau's student and later his wife!

Isn't this sweet? I absolutely love the open book at the bottom of the painting. The gorgeous illustration and the painting-inside-a-painting are such a charming touch. ;)
