Pietà, 1876
Oil on canvas

Notice how the angels are dressed in the colors of the rainbow and form an arc over Mary and Jesus. God placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of his covenant with Noah. Perhaps this rainbow symbolizes the new covenant.

Hope

Hope, 1885
Oil on canvas

Hare's caption: "At the first glance it is rather strange that such a picture should bear such a title, but the imagery is perfectly true. The heavens are illuminated by a solitary star, and Hope bends her ear to catch the music from the last remaining string of her almost shattered lyre. The picture was painted in 1885 and given to the nation in 1897. A very fine duplicate is in the possession of Mrs. Rushton. . . ."

A character from Maurice Howlett's Little Novel Of Italy. Wow. This is one of the most enchanting paintings I've ever seen! It has such Italian sunlight and fairy tale charm. :)

Tristan and Isolde

John Duncan
(Scottish, 1866-1945)
Tristan and Isolde, 1912
Medium unknown

So pretty! I love the folds of Isolde's dress and the strands of her hair flying in the wind.  For anyone who doesn't already know the story, Tristan is bringing Isolde to Cornwall, where she is to marry his uncle, King Mark. But they accidentally drink a love potion and end up falling madly in love, with depressing results.
