Portia

Charles E Perugini
(English, 1839-1918)
Portia, ????
Oil on canvas

Portia is a character from Shakespere's play The Merchant of Venice. Does anyone know what scene this is, or if it is a certain scene at all? I'm curious, but it's a gorgeous painting, with or without a story to it. I love every Perugini painting I see! Everything looks so delicate, and the light is gorgeous.

  1. Gorgeous! I haven't read the Merchant of Venice yet, but I have to for school this year. I'll let you know if I can figure it out. ::)

  2. Actually, I know I answered unknowingly before, but now that I think about it that might be her in her judge's outfit. I don't think a lady of Shakespeare's time would have had her hair down like that. And the pouch in her hand...now I vaguely remember something about that. I'll look it up later today. ;)
